Pistol. Rifle. Clays.

I teach pistol, rifle and clay sports to new shooters, club members, families and groups.

From 2017 to 2020 I was a pistol and rifle instructor at Front Sight Firearms Training Institute in Pahrump, Nevada. I'm also an NRA Certified Pistol Instructor.

Designing a course means I spend my days setting targets and watching people shoot them. I know where a target is easy to see, where it's easiest to break, and why it got away. I coach from the shooter's side and work on one problem at a time.

Beginners are welcome. So are experienced shooters chasing one stubborn problem. All classes are held at Austin Gun Club in Lampasas, which has sporting clays, five-stand, trap, skeet and helice, three pistol bays with steel and paper, and rifle lanes.

Pistol

Handgun · Steel and paper, 3 to 25 yards

Who it's for

New shooters, new carry-pistol owners, and anyone who wants tighter groups and faster hits.

What we work on
  • Safe handling, loading and range commands
  • Grip, stance and sight picture
  • Trigger control without the flinch
  • Drawing and holstering safely
  • Reloads and clearing malfunctions
  • Moving between targets on steel
Sample drills
Dot drill
Small dots at 3 to 5 yards. Slow, clean trigger presses, every shot called.
Bill Drill
Six shots from the holster at 7 yards, as fast as you can keep them all in the A-zone.
Plate rack
Six steel plates, left to right. See the sights, press, move to the next one.

Rifle

AR-15 · Carbine skills from 3 to 100 yards

Who it's for

New AR-15 owners, home-defense shooters, and anyone who wants to run a carbine safely and with confidence.

What we work on
  • Safe handling, loading and unloading the AR-15
  • Zeroing a red dot or optic
  • Stance, mount and using a sling
  • Standing, kneeling and prone positions
  • Reloads and clearing malfunctions
  • Moving between targets, up close and out to 100 yards
Sample drills
Zero check
Small groups at 25 or 50 yards until your optic and your rifle agree.
Low ready to target
Start at low ready, mount and fire two. Speed comes from a clean mount, not from rushing the shot.
Reload and clear
Run an empty-gun reload or clear a malfunction on the clock, then get back on target.

Clay sports

Shotgun · Sporting clays, five-stand, skeet, trap and helice

Who it's for

First-time shotgunners, members working toward their next NSCA class, and shooters getting ready for a tournament.

What we work on
  • Eye dominance and gun fit
  • A consistent mount and stance
  • Reading a target: where to see it and where to break it
  • Hold points, visual pick-up and lead
  • Pull-away, maintained lead and swing-through
  • True pairs and report pairs
Sample drills
Mount drill
With an empty, checked gun at home, mount and track along the line where the wall meets the ceiling. Ten minutes a night builds the habit.
Three break points
Shoot the same crosser early, in the middle and late, and learn where it breaks easiest.
Singles, then the pair
Learn each target of a pair on its own, then put them together.

Ways to train

Private lessons

One shooter and one coach, working at your pace on what you want to fix.

Small groups

Two to four shooters. Couples, families and friends who want to learn together.

First-timers

For people who have never fired a gun, or haven't in years. Safety first, then some early success.

Gun cleaning

A hands-on class on field stripping, cleaning, lubricating and reassembling your gun safely, and knowing when it needs a gunsmith.

How a lesson runs

  1. Step 1

    Safety brief

Eye and ear protection on, guns checked, and range rules covered before anything is loaded.

  2. Step 2

    See where you are

A few shots or targets so I can watch your grip, mount and timing.

  3. Step 3

Fix one thing at a time

One change per drill, until it holds up on the clock or on a hard target.

  4. Step 4

    Leave with a plan

A short list of what to practice before next time, at the range or dry at home.

Events · Charity · Corporate · Parties · Your ranch

Bring the group. I'll set the targets.

I host charity shoots, corporate events and private parties, including bachelor and bachelorette parties. I can also set up a clay course on your ranch and host the shoot there.

I set the targets for your group, run the safety brief, coach anyone who wants help, and keep the day moving. First-timers break targets and have fun, and the good shots still get a challenge.

Target settingSetting targets is what I do for a living. Every presentation is set for the group in front of me, from a first shoot to a tournament-level challenge.

The Great Americans Shoot

In September 2024 I hosted The Great Americans Shoot (TGAS) at Staccato Ranch, on the sporting clays courses I designed there. TGAS is the flagship fundraiser of the Special Forces Trust. Teams of five shoot for the Trust and for military nonprofits of their choice, and each team is paired with a Special Operator as its "6th Man."

The 2024 shoot raised $2.3 million, according to the Trust's 2024 IRS filing. Four Medal of Honor recipients joined us that weekend. Having four in one place at one time is rare, and it made for a weekend nobody there will forget.

Four facilities. Four kinds of ground.

A resort sporting club, a manufacturer's private ranch, a bird-hunting ranch in the Brazos Valley, and a desert sporting clays course outside Las Vegas.

Each one started with the land. Mojave badlands, a Central Texas ranch cut by Salado Creek, post oak woods near College Station, and Hill Country along Lake LBJ all shoot differently, and a course has to be laid out for the ground it sits on.

Horseshoe Bay Sporting Club

Members' sporting club for The Club at Horseshoe Bay Resort

Horseshoe Bay Resort covers more than 7,000 acres along Lake LBJ and has three championship golf courses. The Sporting Club gives its members a shooting amenity at the same level: 150 acres of Hill Country on Highway 71, open to members of The Club at Horseshoe Bay and their families.

The shotgun range fits a full target menu into that ground. There is a 12-station sporting clays course with Hill Country views, a five-stand deck, a flurry deck for groups, and a helice ring, a discipline only a handful of facilities in the country offer. The pistol range has a 50-yard bay and three 25-yard bays under a covered pavilion, and the clubhouse has a trophy room, retail, and a bar called The Last Shot.

My scopeDesigned the whole facility: the 12-station sporting clays course, five-stand, flurry and helice, the pistol range, and the clubhouse grounds, and worked with the construction crews through the build.Ray Bacon was part of this build, and I'm grateful for his help.

Staccato Ranch

Staccato's private members' ranch and factory campus

Staccato Ranch is Staccato's private members' ranch in Florence, about 40 minutes north of Austin.

The shotgun side has three sporting clays courses that step up in difficulty. Mesquite Flats teaches fundamentals, Skyline adds more varied presentations, and Cedar Ridge is the technical course for experienced shooters. Two five-stands round it out: the Meadows deck, fully covered with automatic traps, and the Creek five-stand on the banks of Salado Creek.

Walton Ranch Five-Stand

Five-stand for Walton Ranch Bird Hunting

Walton Ranch runs guided upland bird hunts for quail, pheasant and chukar in the post oak country near Millican, south of College Station. Hunters book day hunts or join for the season, and they hunt behind the ranch's guides and trained bird dogs.

The five-stand is a covered timber deck set in the post oaks, looking out over an open field with timber trap houses. The machines run off solar panels and batteries. A five-stand lets hunters warm up on clays before they head to the field, and gives members something to shoot outside bird season.

My scopeDesigned the five-stand: the covered shooting deck, trap houses and machine placement.Ray Bacon worked on this build with me, and I appreciate his help.

PrairieFire Nevada

Formerly Front Sight · Now Staccato Vegas

A 550-acre shooting property in the Mojave, 45 minutes from Las Vegas. For years it was Front Sight Firearms Training Institute. PrairieFire bought it out of Front Sight's Chapter 11 bankruptcy, held its grand opening on September 23, 2023, and renamed it Staccato Vegas in January 2025.

The ground is broken badland: dry washes, cut banks and caliche ridges with mountains on the horizon. The shotgun course was laid into that terrain, so targets come off ridgelines, cross washes and drop into cuts instead of flying over a flat field. After dark, the same course runs as a black light shoot with glow targets.

My scopeI taught pistol and rifle on this property at Front Sight from 2017 to 2020. When PrairieFire took over after the bankruptcy, I was the one they chose to build its sporting clays course. I designed and built it: station and trap house layout, machine placement and the black light shoot setup.

How a project comes together

From raw ground to the first pull.

Photos from the Horseshoe Bay and Pahrump builds. The same four stages apply to a 12-station resort course or a five-stand behind a ranch house.

  1. Hill Country ranch land before construction

    Step 1

    Walk the ground

I start on foot, reading ridgelines, draws, tree lines and wind, and marking where shot will fall.

  2. Rows of trap machines staged before placement

    Step 2

    Lay out the course

Machines are staged, stations and trap positions are flagged, and every shotfall zone is checked against the property lines before anything is built.

  3. A telehandler setting a heavy timber station frame

    Step 3

Build it with the right crew

I bring in construction companies I know and trust, and work alongside them so stations, trap houses and decks go in exactly as designed.

  4. Checking a station before the first squads

    Step 4

    Set targets and open

Every presentation is set and test-shot, then tuned so a beginner and an experienced shooter can both enjoy the same stand.

What I design

The full target menu.

Sporting clays

Station-by-station courses routed through your terrain, with presentations a new shooter can enjoy and a Master Class shooter has to work for.

Five-stand & flurry

Covered decks with automatic traps and menu cards, built for leagues, lessons and corporate groups.

Helice

Rings for the discipline that shoots most like live pigeon, laid out with proper fall zones and backstops.

Pistol & carbine

Bermed bays at 25 and 50 yards with covered shooting positions and steel target systems.

Long range

Rifle lines and steel out to whatever distance your ground allows safely.

Black light shoots

Black-lit stations and glow targets that turn a Saturday shoot into an evening event.

Stations & trap houses

Timber stations, trap houses set into the grade, covered decks and event pavilions, drawn for your ground.

Master planning

Safety zones, cart paths, parking, check-in and clubhouse placement drawn as one plan with the course.

Construction partners

I work with a network of construction companies and match your project to the right crew, then stay involved until it's built to the design.

Kerrville · Fredericksburg · Comfort · Boerne · Bandera

Designed for Hill Country ground.

Limestone ridges, cedar breaks, live oak mottes and creek bottoms make some of the best sporting clays ground in the country. Targets can come off a ridgeline, cross a creek, or break out of cedar the way birds really fly.

Horseshoe Bay is about 35 miles from Fredericksburg and 57 miles from Kerrville as the crow flies. The Hill Country is my home ground, but I take projects anywhere in the country, as the course in Pahrump, Nevada shows. Here and nationwide, I work with:

  • Private golf and ranch clubs adding a shooting amenity for members and their families
  • Clubs with a trap and skeet field ready to grow into sporting clays, five-stand or helice
  • Hunting ranches that want a five-stand or a private course, like the one at Walton Ranch
  • Resorts and real estate communities looking for an amenity that sells homesites

About

A designer who shoots.

I'm a designer, not a construction company. I lay out the course, then bring in construction companies from my network to build it. I stay hands-on through the build, on the ground with the crew placing stations and machines, until every target flies the way it was drawn.

I shoot pistol, rifle and shotgun, including sporting clays, five-stand and helice. That means I design from the shooter's side of the station: where the target is picked up, where it's broken, and whether a new shooter and a Master Class shooter can both enjoy the same stand.

I'm also an NRA Certified Pistol Instructor. From 2017 to 2020 I taught pistol and rifle at Front Sight Firearms Training Institute in Pahrump, Nevada, and today I teach pistol, rifle and clay sports at Austin Gun Club.
